On the last episode with homecoming nearby, Elena invited Liam to attended a celebration at the corn maze together with her. Instead of attending the homecoming festivities, Caroline was preoccupied after Stefan turned up unexpectedly and needed her help clearing up a mess developed by Enzo. Alaric realizes Jo can't be compelled, so he asks Elena to dig into her background. Meanwhile, Caroline learns Enzo has been captured by Tripp and tries to rescue him; Jeremy hits rock bottom and lashes out in a destructive way; and Damon takes matters into his own hands when he receives some upsetting news.Heeding Elena’s advice to be more social, Alaricreluctantly attended the party, but a devastating accident quickly left him and Jo rushing to save lives. Elsewhere, Tylerfound himself in a dangerous position when his werewolf curse was offer the test, and an emotionally embattled Stefan came clean to Caroline about his intent to move on from Mystic Falls. Lastly, Damon and Bonnie make an important discovery that affected their quest to get back home.
Enzo threatening to out Stefan, Caroline, and Elena as vampires. Hunter Tripp continues to have Enzo as a hostage, and rather than helping him escape as Enzo had initially thought, Matt said that Stefan might have a reason for turning him in. This season will explore themes of loss, denial and just what it means to move on when confronted with immortality, ultimately begging the age-old question - are you able to ever really go home again?
